Story: The Syamantaka Jewel

It was the rainy day, everything looked gloomy for Satrajit because he just lost a fortune today because of gambling. Now he barely had money to get by for this month and he had a daughter and wife to feed at home. He made big mistake gambling all his money in the rage to win against his brother Prasena. His own brother tricked Satrajit to make him bet all his money because of his jealousy. Prasena was jealous because he had more money them him but Satrajit didn’t know they he was tricked by his brother Prasena into gambling all of his wealth.

While walking along the riverside suddenly Surya the God of Sun presented in front of him because he was a big devotee of God of Sun Surya and to see him in trouble he couldn’t see it. Then Surya the Sun God said to him, “I will give you a boon, and you can have whatever you want.” Satrajit got happy asked for the Syamantaka Jewel that was beside Surya. That Jewel wasn’t ordinary it gave gold, kept wild beast and robber away and it can be only wielded by a person who is not coward and is not evil and Satrajit wasn’t a coward and evil but he didn’t know that only people like him can wield this jewel.

Satrajit mood was really good and as he was walking toward his house he saw a handsome youth walking toward him and it was none other than Krishna. When he walks pass by Satrajit he warned him that better watch your back someone might try to steal your jewel. Satrajit felt weird and thought why would that youth say that. Next couple days nothing happens so he thought the youth was crazy. Prasena found out that Satrajit obtains a jewel from Surya the God of Sun and he felt even more jealous so he decided to trick him again to get the jewel, so he asks his brother to borrow the jewel to show his friends and Satrajit agreed. As soon as he got the Jewel he left this town and ran away but that jewel can only be held by people who is not a coward and evil. Prasena wasn’t coward but evil so he met his end in the jungle by Krishna himself. Then Krishna brought back the jewel back to Satrajit.

When Satrajit saw that he got really happy because he was trying to find his brother for stealing his jewel and couldn’t find Prasena. And out of his happiness he asked Krishna to marry his daughter Satyambhama and Krishna couldn’t decline either because she was really beautiful. They got married and Satrajit gave the Syamantaka jewel to his daughter and that brought lot of happiness to her and lived happily ever after.

Author Note: This a story of Syamantaka Jewel the was given to Satrajit by Surya the God of Sun through a boon. It is an exact same story but I made a little change to it such as instead of Prasena getting killed by a lion, he got killed by Krishna. In an original story, Satrajit thought that Krishna stole the jewel but instead, his brother stole the jewel when he gave him for safe keep. But Krishna did find the jewel and gave it back to Satrajit and he married his daughter Satyambhama.

  3. Hi Jay! I liked reading your retelling of this story, but I haven't read the original. It's a good story about the difference between good, trusting people and devious, greedy people. You also captured the dynamic between brothers and how even after Prasena had swindled Satrajit, Satrajit was still willing to lend his treasure to his brother. Based on your author's note I think your version makes more sense and is more direct than the original.
